Finding Your Identity in Christ (And Shaking Off Society’s Timelines!)

Published on 11 October 2024 at 10:51

Society loves to set these weird “milestones” for life, right? Like, somehow, by age 25 you’re supposed to be married, with a degree in hand, and maybe even a mortgage? Meanwhile, some of us are just trying to figure out what's for dinner! And don’t even get me started on the beauty standards, career pressures, or the idea that you need to "have it all" by 30. Let me tell you. You don’t.

Society's timelines are like those outdated expiration dates in your fridge—pointless, and if you follow them too closely, you’re just going to end up stressed and frustrated. But here’s the thing, in a world that thrives on chaos and deadlines, we belong to God. Your identity isn't found in how quickly you tick off a to-do list or whether you look like you belong in a glossy magazine spread. It’s found in Christ.

The Bible is pretty clear on this. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (and no, that's not just a cute Pinterest quote). The best part? Your worth doesn't depend on people’s opinions or society's ever-changing standards. Your validation comes from God. So, why are we still letting the world tell us who we should be or when we should “arrive”?

Here are some things I believe we need to do as Christians to hold on to our identity in Christ and ditch the world’s noisy opinions:

1. Get Into the Bible

Think of this as your personal pep talk from God. Open that Bible and see what He says about you. Spoiler: He thinks you're awesome. Repeat those truths to yourself every day like the affirmations we see online. You are chosen, loved, and made for a purpose. Keep those truths handy when the world gets too loud.

2. Do a ‘Media Audit’

Let’s be real—what you scroll through can either lift you up or drag you down. If your feed is full of content that makes you feel less-than or gives you a serious case of comparison-itis, hit that unfollow button faster than you hit snooze in the morning! Instead, fill your feed with posts that inspire you, encourage you, and remind you of your worth in Christ. It’s like a cleanse, but for your brain!

3. Audit Your Circle

Let’s talk about the people in your life. Are they helping you grow, or are they low-key tearing you down (even if they try to disguise it as “just joking”)? Teach people how to speak to you. You don’t have to accept negativity or pressure from anyone—family, friends, or that random person at work. Surround yourself with people who speak life into you, remind you of your purpose, and celebrate the masterpiece that you are.

4. Stop Letting Other People Define You

You are not defined by what someone said about you in middle school, or what a toxic boss implied about your potential. What people say about you doesn’t matter. God’s truth does. As long as you’re living in alignment with your God-given purpose, and staying true to yourself, then you’re exactly where you need to be. And that? That’s unshakeable.

So, friends, remember this: You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and society’s standards have nothing on that. Your value doesn’t expire at 30, 40, or beyond. Keep growing in God, stay rooted in Scripture, and find happiness in who He says you are, not what the world expects you to be.

When you live your truth and embrace your God-given purpose, the rest of the world? They'll just have to keep up.
