Rethinking Giving: It’s More Than Just Your Wallet!

"Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.." ~ Luke 6: 38

During our recent Bible study, we discussed the topic of giving. Our host shared some heartfelt stories and encouraged us to think about how we can give back to our communities. As I sat there, something hit me – I started feeling a little guilty. Why? Because I hadn’t given to charity in a while, and my first instinct was to assume that "giving" meant handing over cash.

But then it dawned on me – maybe we’re getting this all wrong. Why is it that whenever someone says "give," our brains immediately think "money"? Am I the only one who jumps to that conclusion?

Don’t get me wrong – money definitely solves problems. We all know that. But is it the only way to give? I’m starting to think that when the Bible talks about giving, it’s asking for something bigger than just financial contributions. Giving is about making an impact, and sometimes, that impact comes in forms that don’t involve a single cent.

So, here’s my take: giving is way more than just opening your wallet. Here are some other ways you can give that can often leave a lasting impression:

1. Give Your Time

You know that local charity or event you keep meaning to help out with? Now’s the time! Volunteering doesn’t cost a thing, and sometimes your presence is worth more than your pocketbook.

2. Offer Emotional Support💛

Being there for someone going through a tough time is priceless. Listening, encouraging, and just being present can mean the world to someone in need.

3. Share Your Skills🎨

Got a talent? Whether it's writing, teaching, or cooking up something amazing, use your skills to help others. Offer a free class, mentor someone, or share your expertise with someone who could really use it.

4. Donate Goods🛍️

Let’s be honest, most of us have a closet or two that could use some decluttering. Gently used clothes, books, or household items can find a new home with someone in need – and it feels so good to give them a second life.

5. Advocate for a Cause📢

If you’re passionate about a cause, be a voice for it! Whether it’s raising awareness on social media, organizing an event, or simply talking to others about it, advocacy can be a powerful way to give.

6. Share Knowledge📚

Your brain is full of valuable info – so why not share it? Whether it's tutoring, giving career advice, or offering guidance, sharing what you know can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

7. Acts of Kindness🌟

Sometimes the smallest gestures make the biggest impact. Help a neighbor with their groceries, leave a kind note for a co-worker, or offer to babysit for a friend. Little things can brighten someone’s entire day.

8. Be a Connector🔗

Know someone who knows someone? Use your network to introduce people to opportunities, resources, or even potential friends. Connecting the right people can change lives, and you never know when you’ll be the bridge someone needed.

So, if you’re like me and thinking about how to give in ways that really matter, try out one of these! Remember, the Bible simply said, “Give.” It didn’t specify how, so maybe it’s time we think outside the offering plate!
