Baking 101

  • Measure Accurately

Baking is a science, so precision is key. Use the right measuring cups for dry and liquid ingredients. And remember, “a pinch” is not the same as “a heaping scoop”—trust me, your cookies will thank you!

  • Room Temperature Ingredients Are Your Friends

Many recipes call for room temperature butter, eggs, or milk. This helps them mix better and create a smoother batter. If you forget to take them out ahead of time, pop them in warm water for a few minutes (just don’t boil them!)

  • Don’t Skip the Preheating

Preheating your oven is essential for baking success. Tossing your goodies into a cold oven is like starting a race with a flat tire. Get that oven hot and ready for action

  • Don’t Overmix

When it comes to mixing, less is often more. Overmixing can lead to tough baked goods. Mix just until combined, especially with delicate batters like cakes and muffins.

  • Know Your Oven

Every oven is a little different. Some run hotter or cooler than others. Invest in an oven thermometer to avoid any baking disasters. You want your cookies to bake, not become crispy hockey pucks!

  • Use Parchment Paper

Lining your baking sheets with parchment paper makes cleanup a breeze and helps prevent sticking. Plus, it adds an air of sophistication to your baking game!

  • Cool Before Decorating

If you’re frosting a cake or decorating cookies, make sure they are completely cool. Nothing says “oops” like melted frosting sliding off a warm cake.

  • Taste as You Go (Responsibly!)

A little taste-testing never hurt anyone—unless you’ve just added raw eggs. But for batters that don’t include raw ingredients, a spoonful here and there is a great way to check your progress.

  • Have Fun!

Baking should be an enjoyable experience! Don’t stress over perfection. Embrace the mess, laugh at the mishaps, and remember: even the best bakers have off days. Every dessert has a story, and sometimes, the funniest ones are the tastiest!
