World Mental Health Day: Mental Health in the Workplace

Published on 10 October 2024 at 16:06

Happy World Mental Health Day, folks! Today’s theme is all about mental health in the workplace, and there’s one thing I need to clear up: Being called a workaholic is not a badge of honor. It’s like being proud of running your phone battery down to 1%—sure, you did a lot, but now you're fried.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always lived by the motto “What’s worth doing is worth doing well,” and I still stand by that. If you’re going to do something, give it your all, by all means! But let me tell you, as I’ve gotten older (and wiser), I’ve learned a very important lesson: Balance is key. That’s right, work-life balance, the elusive unicorn we’re all chasing. It’s about working hard but not sacrificing your sanity. Because, trust me, your mental health shouldn’t be collateral damage in the hustle.

Loving your job is great! But, if your job starts loving you back a little too intensely, you might need to draw some boundaries. No one wins a medal for burnout (unfortunately, because we’d all be gold medalists by now).

Let’s face it: If you burn out, you're not doing anyone any favors—not your job, not yourself, not even that adorable pet, family or friends you’ve been neglecting. So, here’s a few tips on how to nail your job without it nailing you.

Survival Guide for the Modern Worker:

  1. Manage your time like a boss – No one likes a chaotic schedule, except maybe caffeine, but even that has limits. Keep it tight, and you’ll feel lighter.

  2. Prioritize tasks – Got a mountain of work? Break it down into bite-sized pieces. If you can’t eat an entire pizza in one sitting (though, challenge accepted), you can’t do all the tasks at once.

  3. Use To-Do Lists – A good checklist is like a personal assistant that won’t sass you. Plus, checking off things feels oh-so-satisfying.

  4. Off the clock means OFF the clock – When you’re done, you’re DONE. Close that laptop, shut off those work notifications, and please, don’t even think about checking your emails during dinner!

  5. Don’t take your job home – If your job keeps showing up uninvited to your couch time or Netflix marathons, it’s time to set some boundaries. If work wants to come over, it better bring snacks.

  6. Take your time off – You earned it! That vacation time is yours—so use it. You won’t get an award for hoarding PTO.

  7. Call in sick when you’re sick – The world won’t end if you miss a day of work. But you know what might end? That terrible cold you’ve been dragging around like a sad puppy.

  8. Use mental health resources – If your job offers counseling or mental health support, use it! That’s like skipping dessert when it’s already paid for—why would you?

The truth is the job will still be there tomorrow. You? Maybe not if you’re burning out faster than a cheap candle.

At the end of the day, you’re not just an employee. You’re a human with a life, hobbies, friends, and possibly a love for ordering takeout at odd hours. So, close that laptop, go home, and remember—work-life balance is not just a myth; it's the key to thriving, not just surviving
